there’s a woman at the bus stop who’s wringing her hands
counting her change, shuffling where she stands
and she’s all bone and whisky paper mache
she puts up with men always wanting something
sometimes it’s her life or a savior or sex
sometimes it’s what they already have and not what they want
that keeps her eyes nervous and watchful and her face gaunt

but maybe sister one day we’ll all walk free
